He also expressed gratitude for their assistance in the safe evacuation of Indian citizens from Iran. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening India-Armenia relations.
In a post on the social media platform ‘X’, PM Modi shared, “I was delighted to receive a call from Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan on Wednesday. I congratulated him and his party on their recent victory in Armenia’s parliamentary elections. I also thanked him for helping to safely evacuate Indian citizens stranded in Iran amid recent circumstances in West Asia.”
PM Modi emphasized, “We reiterated our shared commitment to further strengthen our warm and multifaceted partnership in key areas such as trade, defense, technology, and people-to-people connections.”
The Prime Minister expressed eagerness to work closely together to elevate India-Armenia relations to new heights.
It is noteworthy that the parliamentary elections in Armenia took place on June 7. The victory of the Civic Contract Party has garnered attention amid the Russia-Ukraine war. The European Union and Western nations congratulated PM Nikol on this win. Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the economic benefits Armenia might lose by forging closer ties with Western countries, stating that the crisis in Ukraine began with attempts to join the EU.
Russia supplies gas to Armenia at $177.50 per 1,000 cubic meters, while European market prices, as mentioned by Putin to Pashinyan in April, exceed $600. In the two weeks leading up to the elections, Russia had imposed bans on the export of Armenian flowers, mineral water, cognac, fresh vegetables, and fruits.
