New Delhi, March 6 – Australian cricket stalwart Steve Smith has officially retired from One Day Internationals (ODIs) following Australia’s semifinal loss to India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Cricket Australia confirmed the news on Wednesday, marking the end of a remarkable ODI career for one of the modern greats.
Smith, who was leading the Australian side in the absence of Pat Cummins, played a determined knock of 73 runs in the semifinal, but it wasn’t enough to prevent a four-wicket defeat at the hands of India. While he steps away from the 50-over format, Smith has confirmed that he will continue to play Test and T20 cricket.
A Fitting Farewell to ODI Cricket
Reflecting on his illustrious ODI journey, Smith stated,
“It has been an incredible ride, and I have cherished every moment. Winning two World Cups was an unbelievable experience. With the 2027 ODI World Cup cycle beginning, I believe this is the right time to step away from the format and allow the next generation to prepare for the future.”
He also reaffirmed his commitment to Test cricket, saying,
“Test cricket remains my priority. I am looking forward to the World Test Championship Final, the West Indies tour, and the home Ashes series against England. I still feel I have a lot to contribute to this format.”
