Square Enix Shifts Gears: More Iconic Games to Launch on Xbox as Part of Multi-Platform Strategy

In a game-changing announcement for fans across platforms, Square Enix intends to launch “more and more” of its games on Xbox, marking a significant shift in the Japanese studio’s long-standing release strategy. In a recent interview with 4Gamer, Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida, affectionately known as Yoshi-P, shared that the company will now embrace a multi-platform approach for upcoming releases.

Square Enix has traditionally favored PlayStation exclusivity for its biggest titles, a tactic that fell short of expectations. Despite major releases like Final Fantasy XVI and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth exclusively launching on PS5, both titles underperformed commercially, hitting the publisher with one of its largest quarterly declines in over a decade.

Fantasian Neo Dimension and More Cross-Platform Releases

The announcement arrives as Fantasian Neo Dimension prepares for its debut on multiple consoles, including Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch on December 5. The game, initially launched as Fantasian on Apple Arcade, represents a bold new chapter in Square Enix’s commitment to multi-platform accessibility. Speaking about the game, Yoshida noted, “Of course, we want you to play the game on other platforms as well… Xbox users, we hope, will embrace it as well.”

For Xbox fans, this decision signals a departure from the long-standing alignment with PlayStation exclusivity that Square Enix has maintained over the years. And for Yoshida, this expansion isn’t limited to Fantasian Neo Dimension. He hinted at a broader vision, stating, “Square Enix will release more and more titles simultaneously on each platform, and this is close to the first installment.”

Xbox Could See More Final Fantasy Games

The Xbox community may also see popular titles like Final Fantasy XVI make their way to their consoles in the near future. When asked about the possibility of bringing Final Fantasy XVI to Xbox, Yoshida expressed optimism. While the game debuted as a PlayStation 5 exclusive in 2023, Yoshida revealed last month that he hopes to extend its reach to Xbox as well. Although no release date has been confirmed, the producer assured fans that the Xbox version remains on Square Enix’s radar.

“Looking towards the Xbox version, we do want to release it on Xbox,” he said, emphasizing the studio’s commitment to broadening its audience. However, he tempered expectations, noting that he couldn’t confirm a specific timeline just yet.

PlayStation-Exclusive Strategy Comes Under Scrutiny

Earlier this year, Square Enix revealed disappointing quarterly figures, recording its steepest decline in 13 years. The sales of flagship titles Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Final Fantasy XVI, and the multiplayer shooter Foamstars — all PlayStation exclusives — fell below expectations. The impact on the company’s revenue and profit margins prompted Square Enix to reconsider its PlayStation-exclusive approach, instead committing to simultaneous releases on all major platforms, including PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

A New Era for Square Enix Fans

This transformation marks a new era for Square Enix and its global fanbase. By making blockbuster releases available on more platforms, the publisher could potentially attract new audiences and strengthen its fan community. For Xbox players, long left out of the company’s most iconic franchises, this expansion is a welcome development. And for Square Enix, it’s a strategic pivot that could redefine the company’s standing in the industry.

As the gaming world awaits further announcements from Square Enix, fans are hopeful that this shift towards platform inclusivity will bring more beloved titles to Xbox, enabling a broader audience to experience the magic that only Square Enix games can offer.
