Guwahati, February 8. A special investigation team (SIT) formed in Assam has revealed significant and shocking details regarding Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi and his wife, Elizabeth Gogoi, and their alleged connections to Pakistan. The SIT has identified Pakistani national Ali Tauqeer Sheikh as the main handler in this case. Sheikh is reported to be an advisor to Pakistan’s Planning Commission.
According to the SIT, Ali Tauqeer Sheikh is a close associate of Elizabeth Gogoi and was the founder of an NGO called ‘Lead Pakistan,’ where Elizabeth Gogoi previously worked. The investigation has also shown that Sheikh has been actively commenting on India’s internal affairs, Parliament, and political issues on social media.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed serious concerns on Sunday regarding Sheikh’s online activities, which are perceived to be aimed at harming India’s interests. Sheikh has repeatedly provided opinions on topics related to India’s domestic politics and security.
The SIT report indicates that Sheikh expanded his contacts in India through international forums and think tank networks related to climate change. The investigation claims that Sheikh and Elizabeth Gogoi were part of the India-Pakistan-linked CDKN Climate Network. Assam officials allege that through these networks, Sheikh has attempted to influence policy discussions in India by mobilizing like-minded individuals.
An official statement from the SIT warned that Ali Tauqeer Sheikh’s ‘anti-India agenda’ has received support from some sympathizers present in Assam and other parts of the country.
Chief Minister Sarma stated that this represents a new method of anti-national activities, distinct from traditional espionage, utilizing NGOs and international policy networks. He clarified that the involvement of a sitting MP elevates this matter beyond a routine investigation, linking it to national security. Therefore, a request is being made to hand over the investigation to the central government and the Ministry of Home Affairs.
