IMD Predicts Intensifying Cold and Rainfall Across Regions

New Delhi: North India remains in the grip of an intense cold wave as temperatures plunge below freezing in several areas, with dense fog and rain adding to the challenges. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of worsening conditions due to heavy snowfall in the hills and an active western disturbance, leading to widespread rainfall and further temperature drops in the coming days.

Delhi Witnesses Rain and Dense Fog

The national capital is expected to see light rain on December 26, with a maximum temperature of 23°C and a minimum of 7°C. IMD has issued a yellow alert for dense fog, which is expected to disrupt visibility and traffic. On Wednesday, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 8.4°C, 1.5°C below the seasonal average.

Freezing Conditions in Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh

Rajasthan has recorded plummeting temperatures, with Pilani and Ganganagar reporting lows of 6.6°C. Cities like Jaipur, Kota, and Udaipur are forecasted to experience light rain, while the chill is expected to intensify post-rainfall. In Uttar Pradesh, districts such as Ghaziabad, Meerut, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Bahraich are under a yellow alert for dense fog, with the cold wave gripping most parts of the state.

Himachal Pradesh and Kashmir Face Harsh Winters

Himachal Pradesh is grappling with heavy snowfall, which has closed 226 roads, including three national highways. In Lahaul-Spiti’s Tabo, temperatures have dipped to -10.6°C. Kashmir is also facing extreme cold, with frozen water bodies and pipelines disrupting daily life. Temperatures in the valley are expected to drop by another 2-3°C over the next few days.

Rain Predicted for Southern India

IMD forecasts light to moderate rain in parts of Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Kerala on December 26-27. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are also expected to witness intermittent showers.

Jharkhand to See Rain from December 28

Jharkhand’s weather is set to change from December 28, with rain predicted in 12 districts, including Ranchi, Garhwa, and Palamu. Following the rain, temperatures are expected to drop further, intensifying the cold wave across the state.

Jaipur and Neighboring Regions to Experience Rain

Jaipur recorded a minimum temperature of 12.96°C on December 26, with cloudy skies dominating the forecast. Light to moderate rainfall is expected until December 28, with temperatures ranging between 12°C and 22°C. Post-rainfall, the weather will clear, leading to colder nights as temperatures dip further.

  • Lucknow: Cloudy skies with a minimum of 15.88°C and a maximum of 25.92°C.
  • Patna: Overcast conditions with a low of 13.96°C and a high of 28.02°C.
  • Bengaluru: Light to moderate rainfall with temperatures ranging between 19.11°C and 25.64°C.
  • Mumbai: Clear skies with temperatures from 23.84°C to 24.89°C.
