Bhopal, December 11 (Udaipur Kiran): The spell of severe cold continues across Madhya Pradesh, with icy winds causing a sharp drop in night temperatures. The mercury has fallen below 10 degrees Celsius in 25 cities, including Bhopal, Indore, Gwalior, Ujjain and Jabalpur. Kalyanpur in Shahdol district remained the coldest place in the state for the third consecutive day, with the temperature staying below 5 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological Department has issued a cold wave alert for the next two days in the state.
According to the Weather Department, jet stream winds are currently active over the northern plains at a speed of around 222 km per hour. This has intensified the cold conditions in Madhya Pradesh. Snowfall in Kashmir Valley and Himachal Pradesh, along with cold conditions in the deserts of Rajasthan and the plains of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi, has further contributed to the drop in temperatures. Winds from these regions are affecting the entire state, including Bhopal.
A cold wave is likely to prevail for the next two days. On Wednesday and Thursday, cold wave conditions are expected in Bhopal, Indore, Vidisha, Rajgarh, Shajapur and Sehore. On Tuesday, the night temperature in Bhopal was recorded at 7.2 degrees Celsius. The lowest temperature in the state was recorded at Kalyanpur in Shahdol at 4.7 degrees Celsius. Indore and 25 other cities recorded night temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius.
Due to the intense cold on Monday and Tuesday nights, minimum temperatures dropped sharply in several districts. On Tuesday morning, dew froze on crops in Raisen, while the temperature in Pachmarhi dropped to 5 degrees Celsius, and steam was seen rising from the lake water there. Temperatures recorded included 7.2°C in Bhopal, 6.1°C in Indore, 9°C in Gwalior, 9.5°C in Ujjain and 8.5°C in Jabalpur.
During Monday-Tuesday night, Rajgarh recorded 5.6°C, Naugaon 6°C, Umaria 6.4°C, Rewa 7.5°C, Malanjkhand 7.6°C, Betul 8.6°C, Raisen, Shivpuri and Mandla 8°C, Datia and Khajuraho 9°C, Damoh, Narsinghpur and Satna 9.2°C, Chhindwara 9.6°C, and Sidhi and Tikamgarh 9.8°C.
