New Delhi, October 6 (Udaipur Kiran): India’s passenger vehicle retail market recorded strong growth in September 2026, with total car sales crossing the 4 lakh mark. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) data, retail sales reached 4,27,213 units in September, up 32.10% from 3,23,391 units sold in September 2025.

Sales also increased 6.17% compared with the 4,02,398 units sold in August 2026. Among the major carmakers, Maruti Suzuki retained the number-one position, while Mahindra moved ahead of Tata Motors and Hyundai to take the second spot.
One of the biggest percentage gains came from VinFast, which recorded 2,964 units in September 2026 compared with just six units in the same month last year. This translated into a 49,300% year-on-year growth.
Maruti Suzuki Remains Number One
Maruti Suzuki sold 1,69,132 cars in September 2026, compared with 1,30,049 units in September 2025. The company sold 39,083 more vehicles and recorded 30.05% year-on-year growth.
Maruti Suzuki held a 39.59% market share in September, remaining the largest carmaker in India’s retail market.
Mahindra Moves to Second Position
Mahindra sold 57,343 vehicles in September 2026, compared with 41,275 units a year earlier. Its sales increased by 16,068 units, translating into 38.93% growth.
Mahindra had a 13.42% market share and moved into the second position, narrowly ahead of Tata Motors.
Tata Motors sold 57,254 units in September 2026 against 44,499 units in September 2025. The company recorded growth of 28.66% with a 13.40% market share.
Hyundai Records 31.46% Growth
Hyundai sold 50,201 vehicles in September 2026, compared with 38,187 units in the same month last year. Its sales increased by 12,014 units, resulting in 31.46% year-on-year growth.
Hyundai’s market share stood at 11.75%.
Kia Records 45.91% Growth
Toyota sold 28,050 vehicles in September 2026, up from 23,075 units in September 2025. The company recorded 21.56% growth and held a 6.57% market share.
Kia sold 26,663 units during the month, compared with 18,274 units a year earlier. Its sales increased by 8,389 units, giving the company 45.91% year-on-year growth. Kia’s market share stood at 6.24%.
Nissan and VinFast Post Sharp Growth
Nissan sold 2,967 vehicles in September 2026 compared with 1,379 units in September 2025. Its sales increased by 115.16%, with a 0.69% market share.
VinFast recorded the highest percentage growth in the list. Its sales increased from just six units in September 2025 to 2,964 units in September 2026. This represents a 49,300% year-on-year increase. The company also had a 0.69% market share.
Other Carmakers Also See Growth
Skoda Volkswagen sold 8,479 vehicles in September 2026, compared with 7,470 units last year, recording 13.51% growth. Its market share was 1.98%.
JSW MG sold 6,475 units against 5,698 units a year earlier, registering 13.64% growth and a 1.52% market share.
Honda sold 5,283 vehicles, up from 3,707 units, recording 42.51% growth. Renault sold 3,410 units compared with 2,562 units last year, posting 33.10% growth.
BMW recorded sales of 1,970 units, up 45.17% from 1,357 units. Mercedes-Benz sold 1,768 units, registering 26.65% growth over 1,396 units sold in September 2025.
Force Motors sold 1,332 vehicles compared with 511 units a year earlier, recording 160.67% growth. BYD sold 836 units, up 14.21% year-on-year.
Citroen recorded 804 units, up 98.03% from 406 units last year. JLR sold 581 units, recording 5.44% growth, while Jeep sold 272 units, up 15.74%.
Overall, the September 2026 retail sales data showed strong year-on-year growth across most carmakers, with several brands recording significant increases in sales compared with the same month last year.
