
Samsung Galaxy S24 series had some unique features including instant slow motion. This feature allows users to watch recorded videos in slow motion by simply long-pressing without having to record in slow motion or manually edit effects. This feature is currently exclusive to the newly launched Galaxy S24 series, which includes the Galaxy S24 Vanilla, Galaxy S24 Plus and Galaxy S24 Ultra. But now Samsung is expanding it to older phones too.
At the official Samsung Korea Forum, a moderator announced the development on February 13th. After revealing details about the feature, it was revealed that up to eight older smartphones will soon support the Instant Slow Motion feature. These include: Samsung Galaxy S23, Galaxy S23+, Galaxy S23 Ultra, Galaxy Tab S9, Galaxy Tab S9+, Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5.
As for the reason for only eight, the post states that the feature requires powerful neural processing units (NPUs) and graphics processing units (GPUs) with a minimum processing speed of 16.6 milliseconds for 60fps videos. However, all eight smartphones listed are powered by the 2nd generation Snapdragon 8 chipset, which seems to be the minimum standard for this feature. Therefore, it is unlikely that this feature will be included in Samsung phones with old or low-performance processors.
Interestingly, Samsung refers to the instant slow motion feature as “time zoom.” In the post, reviewers said that similar to spatial zoom for still images, users can zoom in on the image to see more detail, while the slow motion feature tells you how long it takes between each frame of the video so you can see it the details. The micro-movement is reproduced and the movement appears slower. The post doesn’t mention when this feature will roll out on older phones. However, some reports suggest that it may come with the One UI 6.1 update, expected next month.
The Instant Slow Motion feature currently only supports 8-bit videos recorded in MP4 file format with a resolution of 720p to 8K. The post also highlighted that the South Korean tech giant plans to improve the feature and possibly support 10-bit videos at 480p resolution and MOV file format.
