New Delhi, July 18: The Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Devjeet Saikia, has put an end to speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s future in One Day Internationals (ODIs). Saikia stated that the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s will not be Rohit Sharma’s last match.
Recent reports suggested that the final match of the ODI series against England could mark the end of Rohit Sharma’s ODI career. However, the BCCI Secretary dismissed these claims as mere speculation.
Saikia clarified, “There have been various discussions about Rohit Sharma’s future. There has been no such discussion at the board level. I want to make it clear that there has been no talk of Rohit playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday.”
He emphasized that Rohit remains a regular member of the Indian ODI team and will continue to represent the country as long as he is part of the squad. The match at Lord’s will not signify the end of Rohit Sharma’s ODI career.
Notably, Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire to play until the ODI World Cup scheduled for 2027. However, he has not made significant contributions with the bat in the first two matches of the ongoing series against England, scoring 11 runs in the first match and 26 runs in the second.
Following India’s defeat in the second ODI held in Cardiff, batting coach Sitanshu Kotak also supported Rohit, stating that a player of his caliber should not be under pressure regarding performance or future.
Kotak remarked that Rohit is an exceptional player, and his inability to score runs in the first two matches does not affect his capabilities. He noted that it seemed Rohit was on the verge of a big innings in the second ODI, but it did not materialize.
