New Delhi, March 20 – Young batting sensation Riyan Parag has been named Rajasthan Royals’ stand-in captain for the first three matches of IPL 2025, the franchise announced on Thursday. Regular captain Sanju Samson has not received clearance from the BCCI’s Center of Excellence for wicketkeeping duties, meaning he will only be available as a batsman or Impact Player until fully fit.

🏏 Official Statement from Rajasthan Royals
In an official statement, the franchise confirmed:
“Sanju Samson is an integral part of the Royals setup. Until he receives clearance for wicketkeeping and fielding, he will continue contributing with the bat. Once he is fully fit, he will resume his role as captain.”
🔹 Why is Sanju Samson Unavailable for Captaincy?
During India’s five-match T20I series against England, Sanju Samson suffered a finger injury after being struck by a Jofra Archer bouncer. Following the injury, he underwent surgery and completed his rehabilitation at the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bengaluru.
While Samson has recovered enough to bat and play as an Impact Player, doctors have advised additional rest before he resumes wicketkeeping duties.
🚀 Riyan Parag’s First Assignment as Captain
Riyan Parag’s leadership debut will take place on March 23, when Rajasthan Royals face Sunrisers Hyderabad. This will be followed by two home games in Guwahati against:
📅 March 26 – vs Kolkata Knight Riders
📅 March 30 – vs Chennai Super Kings
Parag, who has been with Rajasthan Royals for multiple seasons, now gets a golden opportunity to showcase his leadership skills on the IPL stage.
🔄 Captaincy Change: A Strategic Move for Rajasthan Royals
✔ Sanju Samson remains a key batsman and Impact Player
✔ Riyan Parag gets an opportunity to lead in the absence of Samson
✔ RR banking on youth and leadership potential of Parag
✔ Samson will take over as full-time captain once medically cleared
With Riyan Parag leading the squad for the first few games, all eyes will be on the young cricketer to see how he handles the responsibility at the highest level.
