Varanasi, May 11, 2025 – The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a rain and thunderstorm alert for 20 districts in Uttar Pradesh today. While parts of the state brace for pre-monsoon showers, temperatures in over 10 districts have surged to around 40°C, with Prayagraj recording the highest.

Rain and Storms Hit Several Districts Over the Weekend
On Saturday, Agra experienced strong winds reaching speeds of 80 km/h, accompanied by dark clouds and sudden darkness during the day. The storm uprooted several hoardings and trees. Bijnor, Sambhal, Jalaun, and Meerut also witnessed moderate to heavy rainfall, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas like Dhamapur in Bijnor.
In Ghaziabad, sunny skies were reported on Sunday morning with temperatures expected to rise to 37.5°C during the day, along with partly cloudy skies by the afternoon.
Heatwave Conditions to Intensify Across the State
IMD meteorologist Atul Kumar Singh stated that the influence of the western disturbance is gradually weakening, paving the way for a rise in maximum temperatures by 3°C to 5°C across all districts within the next 48 hours. By the end of the month, the mercury may climb up to 45°C, ushering in intense summer conditions.
Monsoon Expected to Arrive in Uttar Pradesh by June 20
Manoj Srivastava, a senior meteorologist at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), confirmed that the monsoon is likely to reach Uttar Pradesh on June 20, entering the state through the Sonebhadra district, a common entry point historically. He further predicted a 15–20% increase in rainfall compared to the previous year. On average, the state receives about 1000 mm of rainfall during the monsoon season.
Pre-Monsoon Activity from June 1
According to Srivastava, rainfall beginning June 1 will be classified as pre-monsoon, even though it contributes to the season’s cumulative precipitation. Official monsoon status is declared only after a formal announcement by IMD.
