Udaipur : A message of devotion, surrender and freedom from ego was shared during a Shiv Katha organised at Narayan Seva Sansthan on the occasion of the holy month of Shravan. Addressing the gathering, Sansthan President Prashant Agarwal narrated the episode of Ravana, an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva, and said that although Ravana gained immense wealth and fame through his intense worship of Shiva, his ego ultimately became the reason for his downfall.
Ravana’s Ego and the Power of Lord Shiva
Agarwal said Ravana once went to Mount Kailash to worship Lord Shiva, where Nandi stopped him. Ravana became angry out of arrogance, while Lord Shiva was immersed in meditation.
Driven by pride in his strength and abilities, Ravana attempted to lift Mount Kailash and take it to Lanka. As the mountain began to shake, Goddess Parvati became concerned. Lord Shiva then placed the toe of his foot on Mount Kailash to subdue Ravana’s arrogance, causing Ravana to become trapped beneath the mountain.
Devotion, Not Power, Wins Divine Grace
Agarwal said that during the crisis, Ravana realised his mistake and understood that Lord Shiva could not be pleased through power, but through devotion, surrender and love.
He subsequently composed the Shiv Tandav Stotram in praise of Lord Shiva. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva freed Ravana.
Message for Present-Day Life
Agarwal said the episode carries an important message for modern life as well. A person cannot be won through arrogance, pressure or the use of power. Wisdom, love, trust and humility are the real ways to win people’s hearts.
He said displaying power creates distance in relationships, while love and trust help build a sense of belonging and strengthen human bonds.
A large number of differently-abled people and their family members attended the Shiv Katha and listened to the narration. The atmosphere became devotional as devotees participated in the programme and listened to the religious discourse with devotion.
