Udaipur, May 21: In a major boost to rail connectivity and infrastructure in southern Rajasthan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will formally inaugurate the electrified Udaipur-Ahmedabad railway line via virtual mode from Bikaner on Thursday, May 22. The completion of this long-awaited project is set to enhance travel efficiency and pave the way for more high-speed and long-distance trains from Udaipur, including to Mumbai and South India.

The 299-kilometer electrification project, which began in March 2022, was completed in December 2024 at a cost of ₹210 crore. Since January 2025, trains have been operating on this route using electric locomotives, offering improved speed, reduced pollution, and energy efficiency.
Four Trains Already Running on Electric Engines
Out of the nine trains currently running on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad section, four are now powered by electric engines. These include:
-
Kota–Asarwa Express
-
Indore–Asarwa Express
-
Jaipur–Asarwa Express
-
Agra–Asarwa Express
The remaining trains are expected to transition to electric traction in the coming months, further streamlining operations.
Mumbai and South India Connectivity on the Horizon
With the electrification now complete, Western Railway is actively working on proposals to launch new long-distance trains, including the Udaipur-Mumbai route and connections to southern states. The Udaipur–Ahmedabad Vande Bharat Express, which has been in high demand, is also expected to gain traction soon.
Additionally, Udaipur MP Dr. Mannalal Rawat and Chittorgarh MP CP Joshi have submitted a joint proposal for a Vande Bharat Express connecting Chittorgarh–Udaipur–Dungarpur–Ahmedabad to Surat. Western Railway’s Mumbai division is currently evaluating the feasibility of this route.
Impact and Future Outlook
The electrification of the Udaipur-Ahmedabad track is expected to:
-
Reduce travel time and increase frequency of trains
-
Cut down on diesel consumption and carbon emissions
-
Improve the reliability and efficiency of rail services in the region
-
Lay the groundwork for semi-high-speed services like Vande Bharat
With enhanced infrastructure in place, Udaipur is poised to become a key rail hub, connecting northern Rajasthan with major economic centers across India.
