New Delhi, August 5 (Udaipur Kiran) – The Indian men’s hockey team, ranked fifth in the world, will face four-time Olympic gold medalists and current FIH Hockey World Cup champions Germany in the semifinals of the ongoing Paris Olympics on Tuesday.
This matchup was confirmed after Germany, ranked fourth, narrowly defeated seventh-ranked Argentina 3-2 in their quarterfinal match on Sunday.
In the other semifinal, the Netherlands will take on Spain. The Netherlands, currently ranked third and with two Olympic gold medals to their name, secured their semifinal spot by defeating Australia 2-0. Sixth-ranked Australia, a three-time World Cup winner, suffered a significant setback with consecutive losses to India (their first Olympic defeat to the Asian giants since 1972) and the Netherlands.
Spain clinched their semifinal berth by defeating the world’s number one and reigning Olympic champions Belgium 3-2 in their quarterfinal match.
Led by Harmanpreet Singh, the Indian men’s hockey team advanced to the semifinals after a thrilling quarterfinal victory over Great Britain in the Paris Olympics. The score was tied 1-1 at the end of regulation time, leading to a shootout where India triumphed 4-2 to secure their place in the semifinals.
Currently, the Indian contingent has won three bronze medals at the Paris Olympics, all in shooting.
