Organ Donation Awareness Seminar Held on Theme ‘Organ Donation: The Greatest Gift’

Udaipur, July 18: An awareness seminar on the theme “Organ Donation: The Greatest Gift” was organised at Field Club, Jaipur, on the initiative of Rahul Bhatnagar, President of Green People Society, Udaipur.

Organ Donation

The keynote speaker, Ajay Gupta, described organ donation as one of the highest forms of service to humanity and urged society to join the movement.

He said that just as blood donation and eye donation have become social values, organ donation should also be transformed into a mass awareness campaign. Explaining the scientific concept of brain death, common misconceptions associated with it and the process of posthumous organ donation, he said that one brain-dead donor can save the lives of eight people and improve the quality of life of nearly 75 others.

Awareness Month and National Organ Donation Day

Ajay Gupta informed participants that Organ Donation Awareness Month is currently being observed and that National Organ Donation Day is celebrated on August 3. He cited the inspiring example of organ donation by two-year-old Ellen Sherren Abraham from Kerala and said such courageous decisions can give a new lease of life to many families.

He further stated that nearly five lakh patients in India are currently waiting for organ transplants, while brain-death cases resulting from road accidents present significant opportunities for organ donation. Greater public awareness, he said, could help save thousands of lives.

Call for Wider Public Participation

The seminar also focused on the role of society, voluntary organisations and the media in promoting organ donation awareness.

During the discussion, participants suggested appointing a “Blood Donation Ambassador” in Udaipur and creating a common platform for social organisations in the form of an NGO Confederation or NGO Conclave.

Green People Society reiterated its commitment to promoting organ donation awareness through all its future programmes, particularly the “Pedal to Jungle” campaign.

Participants also proposed that families of organ donors should be honoured on national occasions such as Independence Day and Republic Day, and that a tradition of giving state honours to organ donors at the time of their final farewell should be encouraged to create a positive social environment around organ donation.

Among those present were Green People Society President Rahul Bhatnagar, Vice-President Sharad Srivastava, Ismail Durga, Yaseen Pathan, Veerpal Rana, Pratap Singh Chundawat, Lalit Joshi and J. S. Khangarot, along with representatives from GBH American Hospital, Scholar Society, Manav Seva Samiti, Narayana Business School and various social organisations.

All participants expressed their commitment to expanding the organ donation awareness campaign in Udaipur.
