Nirav Modi latest to join list of London absconders: Reports

UK Govt officials have assured Union Minister of State for Home Kiren Rijiju, at a meeting of Britain’s full cooperation in India’s efforts to extradite Nirav Modi, liquor baron Vijay Mallya and others.

It seems India’s big ticket economic absconders Lalit Modi and Vijay Mallya have added to their ranks in London. The latest to join them is PNB bank scamster Nirav Modi.

According to reports, the designer diamond jewellery maker is now in London where he owns a store and is seeking asylum in the UK in an apparent bid to escape consequences in cases against him in India. Officials now say the CBI has approached Interpol seeking a red corner notice against Nirav Modi and his co-accused Mehul Choksi.

Both Nirav Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi are being probed by the Enforcement Directorate and the Central Bureau of Investigation for allegedly defrauding India’s second largest public lender Punjab National Bank of over 13,000 crore rupees in collusion with some insiders.

Nirav Modi and Choksi left India before criminal charges could be filed against them. By escaping to London and claiming political asylum, Nirav Modi’s attempt seems to be to draw Indian agencies into litigation related to extradition.

Liquor baron turned economic offence absconder Vijay Mallya, wanted in India on money laundering and fraud charges of over 9,000 crore rupees, has already taken refuge in UK laws and courts to dodge justice back home.
