Mumbai, October 20 (Udaipur Kiran): A shocking case of cyber fraud has surfaced in Mumbai, where an 82-year-old retired man from Vile Parle was allegedly duped of ₹1.08 crore by fraudsters posing as officials from the CBI and Delhi Police. The Mumbai Cyber Police have registered an FIR against unidentified persons and launched an investigation.
According to Mumbai Police, the victim, Mr. Bakshi, first received a WhatsApp video call from a man who introduced himself as Pawan Kumar from the Department of Telecommunications, Delhi. The caller claimed that a fake bank account had been opened using Bakshi’s Aadhaar card at Canara Bank, and that it was being used for illegal international transactions.
Following this, Bakshi received more calls from individuals identifying themselves as Sub-Inspector Khushi Sharma from Delhi Police and CBI officer Hemraj Kohli. The fraudsters threatened him with an imminent arrest warrant and demanded his bank details under the pretext of issuing a “clearance certificate.”
Fearing arrest, the elderly man transferred ₹1.08 crore from his and his wife’s bank accounts to multiple accounts provided by the fraudsters. The scammers stayed in constant touch with him through WhatsApp video calls, repeatedly warning him not to disclose the matter to anyone, including his children.
After realizing he had been cheated, Bakshi lodged a complaint at the West Region Cyber Police Station. A case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Information Technology Act. Police are now tracking the mobile numbers and bank accounts used in the fraud to trace the culprits.
Mumbai Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant and avoid sharing personal or banking information with unknown callers claiming to be government officials or law enforcement officers.
