Evian, June 18: During the G7 summit in Evian, France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump engaged in discussions focusing on ending conflicts in West Asia, significant progress in the interim trade agreement between India and the U.S., and mutual cooperation in defense, strategic technologies, energy, and trade.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Prime Minister Modi appreciated President Trump’s efforts to establish peace and stability in the broader region. He emphasized the importance of maintaining freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz and ensuring the safety of sailors.
According to the MEA’s statement, both leaders reviewed the remarkable progress made under the India-U.S. Compact (military partnership, rapid trade, and opportunities for technology promotion) since their meeting in Washington D.C. in February 2025. They welcomed the significant advancements in defense, strategic technologies, energy, and bilateral trade.
The statement also noted that both leaders expressed satisfaction with the important progress made in negotiations towards an interim bilateral trade agreement and instructed their officials to work towards a balanced, mutually beneficial, and commercially meaningful agreement as soon as possible. U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer is scheduled to visit India next week regarding this matter.
The MEA concluded by stating that Prime Minister Modi and President Trump reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the comprehensive global strategic partnership between India and the U.S. and advancing cooperation across all sectors for the mutual benefit of both nations and their peoples.
Earlier, Prime Minister Modi expressed his pleasure at meeting President Trump on the social media platform ‘X’, stating, “It was great to meet President Trump in Evian. We reviewed the continuous progress of our bilateral cooperation in trade, energy, defense, technology, and people-to-people relations.”
He also highlighted India’s appreciation for the progress made in efforts to restore peace and stability in West Asia, reiterating the necessity of keeping the Strait of Hormuz open for the global economy and the importance of ensuring the safety and security of sailors and ordinary citizens.
