Modi Advocates for Stability and Maritime Security at G7 Summit

Paris, June 19: Following the recent agreement between the United States and Iran, India has expressed hope for the swift return of peace and stability in West Asia. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the issue of maritime security during meetings with global leaders at the G7 summit held in Évian, France.

Misri informed reporters in Paris that India has consistently stressed the importance of freedom of navigation in international maritime routes and the need for uninterrupted trade. The Prime Minister specifically raised concerns regarding the safety of maritime personnel.

He noted that millions of Indian seafarers play a crucial role in facilitating global trade by working on ships and maritime services worldwide. Therefore, their safety should be a shared concern not only for India but for the entire world. This point was reiterated by the Prime Minister during his address at the G7 summit and in several bilateral meetings with world leaders.

The Foreign Secretary highlighted that Modi reiterated India’s desire for lasting peace and security in West Asia during discussions with global leaders. He mentioned that India views the new understanding between the U.S. and Iran positively and hopes for a swift return to peace and stability in the region.

India was invited as a partner country to the 52nd G7 summit, where Prime Minister Modi discussed significant issues related to India and the Global South with world leaders. This marked India’s 13th participation in the G7 summit and Modi’s seventh consecutive attendance.

Misri also reported good progress on the interim free trade agreement between India and the U.S., stating that they are very close to finalizing the deal. U.S. Trade Representative Jamison Greer is expected to visit India next week to advance these discussions. This was a key topic during the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump in Évian.
