New Delhi, May 6: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is facing increasing criticism for refusing to resign following a significant defeat in the state assembly elections. Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma and social activist Ashok Pandit have condemned her stubbornness, labeling it an attack on democracy.
Ram Gopal Varma took to the social media platform X, expressing disbelief that Banerjee, after decades in politics and 15 years as Chief Minister, is ignoring the fundamental institutions that are part of democracy’s DNA. He emphasized the importance of respecting democratic institutions and stated that resigning after election results is a democratic tradition that Banerjee is overlooking.
On the other hand, Ashok Pandit, known for his outspoken views on national issues, made serious allegations against Banerjee on Instagram. He claimed that she should be arrested for crimes committed during her tenure, including the killing of Hindus, sexual violence, and genocide. He described her presence in society as dangerous due to her criminal mindset and suggested that she requires serious medical help.
Pandit accused Banerjee of inciting communal violence and atrocities against the Hindu community, asserting that her policies have led to increased violence and migration in the state.
In the recent election results, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) performed remarkably well, securing 206 seats, while the Trinamool Congress managed only 81 seats. Banerjee herself lost her Bhawanipur seat by over 15,000 votes to BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, intensifying the criticism against her.
Many believe that her decision to remain in office despite the electoral mandate contradicts democratic values, urging her to respect the democratic tradition by accepting the people’s verdict.
