Lakhs evacuated as Kilaueau volcano devours 26 homes till now

But no casualties have been reported so far.

Officials in the County of Hawaii said that the more than 1,700 people, who have been evacuated since the volcano erupted last Thursday, still do not know when they will be able to return to their homes, according to local media reports on Monday. But a small part of those affected by the eruption went back home to collect pets and possessions and essential medicines.

The Kilauea Volcano erupted on Thursday last week, followed by a number of earthquakes of varying magnitudes, with the biggest being 6.9.

The ground split open on the east end of Leilani Estates, exposing an angry red beneath the lush landscape. From the widening gash, molten rock burbled and splashed, then shot dozens of feet in the air.

Some local people have uploaded videos and images to social media platforms.

Kilauea Volcano is one of the youngest and the most active volcanoes in the world. It is located in the Big Island, the largest of the Hawaiian Island chain. It is home to roughly 2,00,000 people.
