Jammu & Kashmir Governor holds All Party Meet

Jammu & Kashmir Governor N N Vohra has been holding a round of meetings since imposition of governor’s rule in the state to tighten administration and security in the state. Friday saw him hosting an all party meeting to take all political stakeholders on board where the next steps on J&K’s governance are concerned. The meeting saw the Governor appealing to all party’s to support him in doing his work. Political parties responded by putting forth their views.

Earlier in the day, the Governor also visited Baltal to review arrangements for the Amarnath Yatra.

Friday also saw an encounter take place between security forces and terrorists. 4 terrorists were killed at the end of the exchange of fire which took place in Anantnag’s Srigufwar area. A police jawan and a civilian were also killed during the encounter. One of the slain terrorists was identified as Dawood, the head of ISJK group which is said to be linked to the Islamic State.

A grenade attack was also reported in Pulwama district’s Tral which left 8 security personnel injured. Mobile and internet services meanwhile remain suspended as a precautionary measure in Srinagar, Anantnag and Pulwama districts.

For the first time, the elite National Security Guard has been deployed in J&K by the Home Ministry at the request of the J&K Police. In the past, though NSG has been partnering the state police and CRPF in training for anti-terror operations, it’s for the first time that it has been deployed there to take part in anti-terror ops although with a limited mandate. Its services being called upon in contingencies like a hostage crisis or terrorists being holed up in a residential area where collateral damage needs to be minimised while tackling the problem. It’s deployment in J&K ahead of the start of the Amarnath Yatra on the 28th of June is also being seen as significant.

Reflecting the govt’s view on upholding the human rights of common people, Union Minister Arun Jaitley has penned a blog post.
