Jerusalem, August 2 (Udaipur Kiran). Israel continues its relentless attacks on Hamas, aiming to break its backbone. On Thursday, Israel claimed that it had killed 59-year-old Muhammad Deif, the head of Hamas’s military branch, in Gaza. This comes just one day after Iran’s capital Tehran was struck by a missile attack, killing Hamas’s top leader, Ismail Haniyeh.
Muhammad Deif, in collaboration with Yahya Sinwar, was responsible for orchestrating and executing the attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,200 Israelis and led to Israel declaring war on Gaza. The ongoing conflict has claimed approximately 40,000 Palestinian lives to date.
The Israeli military reported that Deif was killed in an airstrike on Khan Younis city in Gaza on July 13. The attack on Haniyeh in Tehran on Wednesday was carried out by missile, although Israel has not officially claimed responsibility for it.
Hamas has yet to comment on Deif’s death. Deif was a key commander in Hamas, overseeing the construction of an extensive network of underground tunnels in Gaza over the past 30 years and training fighters in bomb-making.
Israel had been seeking Deif for decades in connection with numerous attacks on Israeli citizens and soldiers. Despite several assassination attempts, Deif had managed to evade capture.
The Israeli military has confirmed Deif’s death and is now making the information public. The airstrike in Khan Younis on July 13, which resulted in the deaths of over 90 people, also claimed the life of Muhammad Deif.
Muhammad Deif, whose full name was Muhammad Diab al-Masri, was born in a refugee camp in Gaza and spent much of his life in tunnels after becoming a member of Hamas.
The day before Haniyeh’s death, on Tuesday, Israel had killed Fuad Shukur, a senior commander of the Hezbollah militant group, in the Lebanese capital Beirut. There is also speculation about the death of another senior Hezbollah commander, Abu Nimah Nasser, on Wednesday. Hezbollah, which is supported by Iran, has been attacking Israel in support of Hamas since October 8, 2023.
