Mumbai : In the 29th match of IPL 2024 held at the Wankhede Stadium here on Sunday, Rohit Sharma played a magnificent century. This is his second century in the Indian Premier League over a span of 17 years. However, his efforts were in vain as the Mumbai Indians lost to the Chennai Super Kings by 20 runs.
Rohit scored an unbeaten 105 runs off 63 balls, completing his century in just 61 balls. Despite his splendid innings, which included 11 boundaries and 5 sixes, it wasn’t enough because CSK put an end to Mumbai Indians’ winning streak of two matches, leaving them with four points in six games.
While it may not have been a victory for the home team, it was a super Sunday for the spectators. Ruturaj Gaikwad (69) and Shivam Dube (unbeaten 66) played fantastic half-centuries, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s sensational 20-run innings off just 4 balls, along with Sri Lankan fast bowler Mathisha Pathirana’s impressive 4-28, restricted Mumbai Indians to 186/6 in 20 overs.
Rohit and Ishan Kishan provided a solid start for the hosts, taking them to 63 runs in the powerplay. Kishan aggressively started by hitting Tushar Deshpande’s second ball for a boundary and then continued with consecutive sixes and boundaries off Shardul Thakur’s third over.
Rohit Sharma continued his brilliant batting form, completing his half-century in just 30 balls, including seven boundaries and two sixes. In the fifth over, India’s captain hit a boundary off his partner Deshpande’s ball, and in the next over, he repeated the same treatment with Mustafizur Rahman.
Before hitting Jaddu’s ball for a boundary and a six, Rohit also struck back-to-back boundaries off Shardul Thakur and Ravindra Jadeja. Pandya contributed with a six before falling for 31 runs off 20 balls, supported by Tilak Varma. Prior to that, Varma had scored 31 runs off 20 balls, including five boundaries.
As the run rate increased, Mumbai had to face defeat in the death overs. Shardul Thakur and Tushar Deshpande bowled fantastic overs, giving away just three and two runs respectively.
