India’s T20 Openers Shine with Aggressive Batting Styles
India's T20I openers Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are changing the game with their aggressive approach.

Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Vaibhav Sooryavanshi are reshaping India’s T20 batting lineup with their aggressive style and varied approaches. This trio is part of a vibrant era in Indian cricket, where the focus is on attacking from the start.
Sharma stands out as a formidable opener, having scored 2,216 runs in 67 innings at a striking rate of 198.21 since the beginning of 2024. His performance shows his ability to dominate bowlers, often hitting at least one six whenever he faces a minimum of ten deliveries. After a recent match, he said, “I think the key was simple. Me and Vaibhav were going to enjoy some time in the middle.”
Sanju Samson and Ishan Kishan also contribute to this explosive batting narrative. Samson has amassed 1,229 runs in 39 innings at a strike rate of 181, while Kishan has scored 176 runs at 193.40. Young batsman Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has already scored 291 runs in just nine innings at a strike rate of 192.71.
The opening strategy for India has evolved. Unlike in traditional formats where caution was the norm, the current approach encourages openers to attack during the powerplay. This shift allows players to take risks, as Sharma emphasized, leading to higher scores early in the innings. Kishan said, “The focus is on winning matches, not personal milestones.”
Despite this shift in tactics, challenges remain. The selection conundrum arises as the team must balance four explosive openers while ensuring the middle order receives adequate support. Players like Nitish Kumar Reddy are expected to play crucial roles, presenting the management with tough decisions about the batting order.
India’s recent T20I matches highlight the effectiveness of this strategy. In one match, Sharma and Sooryavanshi opened the innings, resulting in an impressive 118 runs without loss in the powerplay, setting a T20I record. This performance illustrates the potential of their new attacking style, which focuses on dominating initial overs.
While the team enjoys unprecedented depth in batting options, the combination of left-handed and right-handed openers allows for strategic flexibility. However, this can invite vulnerabilities, such as a skilled opposition captain deploying spin against a lineup heavy on left-handers.
As India continues with this experimental yet potent lineup, the spotlight remains on how they will address the various challenges of T20 cricket, particularly with the integration of young talent like Sooryavanshi. The team’s flexibility could prove key in upcoming matches.
