Indian stock indices opened lower this week as oil prices reached new highs, negatively impacting investor sentiment. Brent crude is currently trading over $114 per barrel, leading to a downward trend in major indices, with the Sensex falling by 0.46% and Nifty 50 down by 0.5%.

According to Reuters, “Concerns over supply disruptions due to escalating Mideast tensions pushed crude oil prices higher,” said G Chokkalingam, founder of Equinomic Research. This volatility in the market is expected to persist as long as geopolitical tensions remain unresolved.

On Monday, the stock market briefly ended a four-day losing streak, with the Sensex gaining 482.92 points, or 0.66%, and Nifty rising by 153.20 points, or 0.68%. However, optimism dwindled as GIFT Nifty fell by over 100 points early Tuesday, indicating a weak market open, despite positive movements seen in Asian and U.S. markets.

Analysts suggest that the increase in crude oil prices is weighing heavily on the Indian economy. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, said that domestic equities will likely remain sensitive to fluctuating oil prices and geopolitical developments. He emphasized that volatility is expected to continue as investors assess external risks against potential market recovery.

India’s crude oil imports from the Middle East climbed to 2.8 million barrels per day in September, accounting for 54% of the country’s total imports. Despite being the largest supplier, Russia’s crude oil imports fell to 1.8 million barrels per day, a drop of 14% from August. The share of Russian oil in India’s imports also decreased from 46.6% to 33.5%.

As crude oil prices remain volatile, investors are closely watching global developments, particularly the situations in the Middle East and the upcoming U.S. Federal Reserve policy decisions. With these factors at the forefront, market analysts warn of a continuing downward trend unless significant resolutions are reached.
