Mumbai, February 25: The Indian stock market opened on a positive note on Wednesday, buoyed by strong global signals. At 9:20 AM, the Sensex was up by 478 points or 0.58%, reaching 82,751, while the Nifty gained 147 points or 0.58%, standing at 25,570.
The initial surge was primarily driven by IT stocks, with the Nifty IT index being the top gainer. Almost all indices, including Nifty Metal, Nifty Realty, Nifty Oil and Gas, Nifty PSU, Nifty Commodities, Nifty Services, Nifty Media, Nifty India Defense, and Nifty Energy, were also in the green.
Large-cap, mid-cap, and small-cap stocks continued to show strength. The Nifty Midcap 100 index rose by 235 points or 0.43% to 59,307, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index increased by 98 points or 0.59% to 17,058.
In the Sensex pack, Tech Mahindra, HCL Tech, TCS, Power Grid, Indigo, Tata Steel, NTPC, L&T, Sun Pharma, Adani Ports, Bharti Airtel, ICICI Bank, and BEL were among the gainers. Conversely, SBI, Bajaj Finance, and Asian Paints were the notable losers.
Market sentiment remained positive, with more stocks advancing than declining.
Most global markets were also trading higher, with Shanghai, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, and Seoul showing gains. The US stock market closed in the green on Tuesday.
According to market experts, the bullish trend in the stock market is attributed to a decrease in selling by Foreign Institutional Investors (FIIs). On Tuesday, FIIs sold shares worth only ₹102.53 crore, while Domestic Institutional Investors (DIIs) purchased shares worth ₹3,161.22 crore.
Gold and silver prices have also seen an uptick, with gold rising by 0.44% to $5,199 per ounce and silver increasing by over 2% to $89 per ounce at the time of writing.
