The Indian rupee fell to 94.98 against the U.S. dollar in early trading on October 26, driven primarily by elevated crude oil prices and escalating geopolitical tensions in West Asia. This marks a continued struggle for the currency.

Forex analysts noted that the rupee opened lower at 94.92 before dropping further. Anuj Choudhary, a research analyst at Mirae Asset Sharekhan, stated, “The Indian rupee opened slightly lower on elevated crude oil prices and geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.” He also pointed out that the softness of the U.S. dollar and U.S. Treasury yields helped to moderate the currency’s decline, but the overall sentiment remains bearish.

This depreciation follows a trend; on October 23, the rupee fell by 12 paise, closing at 94.93 against the dollar. Ongoing tensions in the Middle East contribute to risk aversion in global markets, hindering the rupee’s recovery.

Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) showed a decrease of $5.011 billion in foreign exchange reserves, bringing total reserves down to $721.016 billion. This decline follows an even larger drop the previous week.

Brent crude oil prices have surged to $114.48 per barrel, adding to the economic pressure. Rising oil costs typically translate into higher import bills for India, further complicating the rupee’s recovery.

Choudhary predicted a slight negative bias for the rupee, citing pressures from foreign institutional investor selling and elevated oil prices, alongside potential RBI interventions that may provide some support.

India’s domestic equity indices also suffered, with the Sensex dropping by 536.30 points and the Nifty falling by 200.10 points.
