Kolkata, June 19: The Indian Navy is set to enhance its maritime strength with the induction of three indigenous warships on June 21. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will preside over a special ceremony at the Shyama Prasad Mukherjee Port in Kolkata, marking a significant milestone in the Navy’s modernization efforts.
The three warships include the guided missile frigate Dunagiri, the anti-submarine warfare shallow water craft Agreh, and the large survey vessel Sanshodhak. This event follows a historic occasion on March 30, when three indigenous vessels were commissioned into the Navy on the same day.
The Dunagiri, a modern iteration of the previous INS Dunagiri, was delivered to the Indian Navy by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) as part of Project 17A. This frigate is equipped with advanced systems, including the BrahMos missile system, Barak-8 long-range surface-to-air missiles, and indigenous torpedoes, making it capable of countering various maritime threats.
The Agreh, part of the anti-submarine warfare project initiated in 2019, is designed to effectively combat enemy submarines. It is equipped with anti-submarine rocket launchers and lightweight torpedoes, enabling it to operate at high speeds and cover significant distances.
The Sanshodhak plays a crucial role in hydrographic surveys and safe navigation, utilizing over 80% indigenous materials in its construction. With a length of 110 meters and a weight of approximately 3,800 tons, it will significantly contribute to the country’s maritime security and navigation safety.
