Mumbai, June 20: On the occasion of the Narendra Modi government’s 12th anniversary, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced on Saturday that the much-anticipated India-United Kingdom (UK) Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will come into effect from July 15.
Addressing a press conference, Minister Goyal stated that under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has transformed from a nation of potential to a self-reliant global power. He was accompanied by state co-media chief Omprakash Chauhan and state spokesperson Pankaj Modi.
Goyal highlighted that over the past 12 years, the world has faced significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. However, Prime Minister Modi has turned every crisis into an economic opportunity.
“Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, India has signed nine historic Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), granting access to markets in 38 developed countries,” Goyal said. He emphasized that this will open new global markets for Indian products, create job opportunities, and pave new paths for Indian entrepreneurs, farmers, fishermen, and women business owners.
He further noted that the bilateral talks during Prime Minister Modi’s recent visit to France and the upcoming India-UK FTA will yield significant positive outcomes for the Indian economy in the near future.
Citing Prime Minister Modi’s global popularity, Goyal mentioned that 33 countries have honored him with their highest civilian awards, including several developed nations and others with which India previously had limited diplomatic ties.
Goyal also referred to the government’s efforts to ensure that benefits reach the last person without discrimination, highlighting the crucial role of digital technology in this initiative. He mentioned several significant achievements in social security and infrastructure.
“Under the Jan Dhan scheme, over 550 million bank accounts have been opened, with more than 320 million accounts in the names of women. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, over 810 million people have received free rations continuously. More than 600 million health cards have been issued under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, providing free treatment to those in need. Additionally, over 580 million people have been provided with security under the Prime Minister’s Security Insurance Scheme,” Goyal stated.
He added that over 40 million permanent houses have been made available under the Prime Minister’s Housing Scheme. The Ujjwala scheme has provided relief from smoke to 110 million women, and the Swachh Bharat Mission has led to the construction of over 120 million toilets, bringing about a revolutionary change in sanitation.
In conclusion, Goyal reiterated that the collective goal of 1.4 billion Indians is to build a developed India by 2047, which remains a guiding mission for the central government. He also mentioned that the country’s internal security has been significantly strengthened, with decisive actions taken against terrorism and successful efforts to integrate youth from previously Maoist-affected areas into the mainstream.
