Birmingham, June 14: India achieved its fifth largest victory by defeating Pakistan by 64 runs in the Women’s T20 World Cup. Batting first at Edgbaston, the Indian women’s team scored 170 runs for the loss of six wickets. In response, Pakistan was bowled out for just 106 runs in 17 overs.
India’s biggest win in the Women’s T20 World Cup came in 2024 against Sri Lanka in Dubai, where they won by 82 runs. The team has also secured a 79-run victory against Bangladesh in Sylhet and a 72-run win against the same team in 2016. In 2010, the ‘Women in Blue’ triumphed over Sri Lanka by 71 runs.
With this victory, India has recorded its seventh win against Pakistan in the Women’s T20 World Cup, out of a total of nine matches played. Australia leads the list with eight wins out of nine matches against South Africa, while New Zealand has won all seven matches against Sri Lanka.
In the match played on Sunday at Edgbaston, India faced early setbacks, losing two wickets for just 18 runs. However, captain Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana rescued the innings with a partnership of 91 runs off 63 balls. Mandhana scored 68 runs off 44 balls, while Kaur contributed 36 runs off 35 balls.
Deepti Sharma (not out 12) partnered with Richa Ghosh (34) to add 45 runs for the sixth wicket, helping the team reach a strong total. For Pakistan, Sadia Iqbal and Fatima Sana took two wickets each, while Tasmia Rubab and Rameen Shameem claimed one wicket each.
In reply, Pakistan’s opening pair of Muniba Ali and Gul Firoza provided a solid start, but once that partnership was broken, the team lost wickets at regular intervals, collapsing for just 106 runs. Muniba Ali was the top scorer for Pakistan, making 41 runs off 35 balls. For India, Deepti Sharma was the standout bowler, taking five wickets for just 10 runs in four overs, while Shree Chani claimed three wickets and Shefali Verma took one.
