Tehran, July 4: India’s Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margerita, and the Governor of Bihar, Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain, represented India at the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei.
Minister Margerita expressed on the social media platform ‘X’, “Lieutenant General (Retd) Syed Ata Hasnain and I represented India at the funeral ceremony of Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei in Tehran. We paid our respects on behalf of the Government of India and the people of India.”
Khamenei passed away on February 28 following a significant attack by the United States and Israel, marking a major shift in Iran’s 46-year-old Shia religious regime. In March, his son Mojtaba Khamenei was appointed as the new Supreme Leader of Iran.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs stated that the high-level representation during this period reflects the strong civilizational ties between the two countries, further strengthening relations among their peoples and enhancing political and economic cooperation.
The farewell ceremonies are scheduled to take place on July 4 and 5 at Imam Khomeini’s Mosalla prayer hall in Tehran, followed by related funeral events on July 6. Another farewell procession will occur on July 7 in the city of Qom, Iran.
According to reports from Tasnim News Agency, the final ceremony will be held on July 9 in Mashhad, after which Khamenei will be buried at the holy shrine of Imam Reza.
On March 5, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri signed the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy in New Delhi, expressing condolences on behalf of the Government of India for the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, posted on ‘X’ that the Foreign Secretary conveyed condolences on behalf of the Indian government and its people.
