New Delhi, August 15: Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the importance of ‘Defence Power’ in his speech on the 2026 Independence Day, highlighting it as one of the seven key areas necessary for building a developed India by 2047. Speaking from the ramparts of the Red Fort, he called for India to become a global supplier of next-generation defense technology, stressing the need for self-reliance in defense.
The Prime Minister stated that there is no alternative to becoming self-sufficient in defense. As countries around the world focus on their own benefits, India cannot remain just a market for others. He urged the development of drones and counter-drone systems and called for leadership in hypersonic defense technology.
Reiterating the government’s commitment to the vision of ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India), Modi insisted that the country should no longer depend on others. While there may be cheaper and quicker options available globally, relying on them does not build our own capabilities nor test the strength of our abilities. Therefore, we must strengthen our own capacities and protect our interests independently. Initiatives like Make in India, Swadeshi, and Vocal for Local are resonating with the Indian populace.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that cybersecurity is an area in defense where the country can utilize the skills of its youth for national and global benefits. He emphasized the need to enhance the capabilities of the defense forces to adapt to changing times, focusing on indigenous defense equipment. Modi noted that the nature of warfare is evolving, and there is no guarantee that conflicts will remain confined to borders. Modern warfare may target infrastructure, banking sectors, or data centers, marking a new approach where factories and infrastructure are at risk. He mentioned that work on ‘Mission Suraksha Chakra’ is progressing rapidly.
Discussing the changes in the defense sector over the past 12 years, the Prime Minister stated that defense production has increased nearly fourfold, and defense exports have surged by almost 50 times, with Indian weapons reaching around 100 countries. He assured that India is prepared for any situation, whether challenges arise domestically or internationally, and that India’s reputation on the global stage is steadily rising.
Modi emphasized that creating a secure India is the responsibility of every citizen, and there is a need for better preparedness to address emerging threats. He noted that the civil defense systems established in the past century have become outdated. In the coming days, a robust civil defense network will be developed, familiarizing them with modern systems. A large voluntary civil defense force will be created to tackle contemporary challenges.
The Prime Minister also highlighted the increasing role of women in nation-building, including in the defense forces, stating that daughters graduating from NDA are demonstrating their capability to lead the country’s army with confidence and authority.
