In an exclusive conversation with DD News on the completion of 4 years of the NDA govt at the centre, Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar recounted the many initiatives and achievements of his ministry.
—The govt has prepared a new National Education policy which will soon be presented before the cabinet. This will be the first such policy to be presented since 1986.
— In addition to Academics, the policy focusses on Health Education, Life skills and value based education.
— The policy further proposes reduction of the academic session of NCERT to half from 2019 onwards.
— Reforms have been introduced in the previous govt’s No detention policy and the stage has been set for reintroduction of examinations in classes 5 and 8.
To ensure universal education the govt has:
— Set up 103 new Kendriya Vidyalayas in 4 years
— Under Beti Padhao 3 lakh girls from weaker sections have been inducted in Kasturba Gandhi Vidyalayas
— Rules laid down for online courses in higher educational institutions enabling these institutions to issue online fulltime certificates, diplomas and degrees at par with full time regular courses
— Samagra Shiksha Yojana initiated for school going students to expand the scope of education, Swayam Portal started so that students can study anytime
— 75 new colleges opened in 115 districts lacking in educational facilities
— ‘Study in India’ portal launched on the lines of Make in India to attract foreign
— Budget for education increased from 67,000 crore rupees to 1,07,000 crore rupees in 4 years.
In other words, the budget for the sector has increased one and a half times. In order to provide relief to students of poorer sections availing loans for technical and higher education, the govt has set aside 2200 crore rupees to benefit 10 lakh students every year.
