Bhopal, July 4 – Continuous rainfall over the past several days has led to flood-like conditions in multiple districts of Madhya Pradesh, causing widespread disruption. While the showers have brought a pleasant change in weather, many rivers and streams are now overflowing, submerging low-lying areas and disrupting daily life. A strong monsoon system remains active over the state, and the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy rain alert for 30 districts on Friday.
Four-Day Heavy Rain Spell Predicted for MP
Meteorologist Dr. Divya E. Surendran confirmed that a monsoon trough and two active weather systems, including a cyclonic circulation, are currently passing through the region, intensifying rainfall across the state. The IMD has forecast very heavy to heavy rainfall for several districts over the next four days.
On Friday, an orange alert (very heavy rain) has been issued for Jabalpur, Mandla, Dindori, Balaghat, Sheopur, Shivpuri, and Guna. These regions may receive up to 8 inches of rain in the next 24 hours.
Additionally, heavy rain alerts have been issued for Gwalior, Morena, Bhind, Datia, Vidisha, Raisen, Pandhurna, Chhindwara, Seoni, Narsinghpur, Sagar, Damoh, Rajgarh, Ashoknagar, Tikamgarh, Chhatarpur, Panna, Satna, Katni, Maihar, Umaria, Shahdol, and Anuppur. Light to moderate showers are expected in other parts of the state as well.
Rising Water Levels, Villages Flooded in Mandla and Shivpuri
On Thursday, heavy rains continued across the state. In Bichhiya (Mandla), the downpour caused flooding in several villages, prompting Home Guard teams to rescue over 70 residents. In Shivpuri, villagers were seen carrying children and women across the swollen Sindh River, while several villages in Kolaras were inundated, with water entering homes, schools, and temples.
Orchha in Niwari also witnessed intense rainfall, while in Umaria, the Kathli River rose dangerously close to bridge levels. The Mahanadi in the same district is also witnessing a surge in water levels.
Widespread Rainfall Across MP, Bhopal Sees Showers
In the capital Bhopal, light rainfall began by afternoon on Thursday and continued into the evening. Rewa, Khajuraho (Chhatarpur), and Datia recorded about three-fourths of an inch of rain, while Mandla and Shivpuri saw about half an inch.
Over 20 other districts, including Betul, Guna, Gwalior, Indore, Sheopur, Damoh, Jabalpur, Satna, Sidhi, Umaria, Balaghat, Dhar, Mauganj, Shajapur, Dewas, and Agar-Malwa, experienced intermittent light showers throughout the day and night.
Authorities Urge Caution
District administrations are on high alert and have deployed teams to vulnerable areas. Citizens are advised to stay away from swollen rivers and waterlogged zones and follow local advisories to ensure safety.
