Jaipur, July 31 – Due to heavy rainfall across Rajasthan, several districts are facing flood-like conditions. The Jaipur Meteorological Centre has forecast more heavy rain in various parts of the state on Thursday. In view of the situation, an orange alert has been issued for six districts and a yellow alert for twelve others. As a precautionary measure, schools in 13 districts have been declared closed today.
Flooding, Road Closures, and Infrastructure Damage
Districts including Jaipur, Kota, Sawai Madhopur, Tonk, Sikar, Dausa, Bharatpur, and Alwar recorded rainfall ranging from 2 to 6 inches on Wednesday. Waterlogging was reported in low-lying areas, and visuals of flooding emerged from several locations. In Sawai Madhopur, the Augad bridge on National Highway-552 was washed away due to strong currents, completely cutting off the route to Sheopur (Madhya Pradesh).
Jaipur witnessed nearly five hours of continuous heavy rainfall on Wednesday, followed by light showers late into the night. Several roads were submerged, some sections caved in, and ceilings and plaster from government buildings fell due to water seepage. Waterlogging caused traffic jams in various parts of the city throughout the day. Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma visited the city in the evening to assess the situation and directed officials to carry out immediate road repairs, ensure proper drainage, and resolve related issues. On Friday morning, the city remained overcast with light drizzle continuing.
Morale Dam Overflows, River Parvati in Spate
In Dausa district’s Lalsot region, Asia’s largest earthen Morale Dam has overflowed again this year, with approximately one and a half feet of water flowing out. Notably, the dam had also reached full capacity in 2024. In Kota district’s Itawa region, the Parvati River is in spate, cutting off all connectivity between Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. One foot of water is flowing over the newly built bridge on the Itawa-Khatoli route, forcing closure of traffic on State Highway-70 (Kota-Gwalior-Sheopur route).
Highest Rainfall Recorded in Jaipur’s Shahpura
In the last 24 hours, the highest rainfall was recorded in Jaipur’s Shahpura area at 155 mm. Other areas in Jaipur received: Kotputli 112 mm, Paota 82 mm, Jamwaramgarh 73 mm, Madhorajpura 63 mm, Jaipur Collectorate 59 mm, JLN Marg 52 mm, Viratnagar 72 mm, and Chomu 50 mm. Outside Jaipur, rainfall was reported in Alwar’s Ramgarh (52 mm), Govindgarh (44 mm), Bharatpur’s Rudawal (59 mm), Karauli’s Todabhim (43 mm), Sikar’s Patan (105 mm), Neemkathana (45 mm), Tonk’s Peeplu (102 mm), Tonk city (60 mm), Niwai (44 mm), and Dausa’s Bandikui (63 mm).
Bisalpur Dam Water Release and Rain Forecast
From the Bisalpur Dam in Tonk district, 18,000 cusecs of water is still being released through three open gates. Director of the Jaipur Meteorological Centre, Radheshyam Sharma, said that the depression system originating from the Bay of Bengal has now weakened into a low-pressure system, and its impact is expected to end by August 2. He added that the monsoon trough line is currently passing through Bikaner and Sikar, due to which there is still a possibility of heavy rain in some districts on Thursday. Rainfall intensity is expected to decrease across the state from August 1 onwards.
