Heavy Rain Alert Issued in South Bengal on Rath Yatra Day; Yellow Warning for Multiple Districts

Kolkata, June 27 – As devotees across Bengal celebrate the auspicious Rath Yatra, weather conditions in South Bengal are expected to take a wet turn due to a low-pressure system forming over the Bay of Bengal. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts, warning of moderate to heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds over the next few days.

Cloudy Skies Over Kolkata; Intermittent Showers Likely

Since early morning, cloud cover has enveloped Kolkata, with the atmosphere remaining humid. The temperature is hovering around 28°C, with a forecasted maximum of 32°C and a minimum of 27°C. IMD expects intermittent rain from noon onward, potentially affecting outdoor Rath Yatra celebrations in the city.

Districts on Yellow Alert

According to the Alipore Meteorological Centre, the following South Bengal districts are under yellow alert due to the possibility of 7 to 11 cm of rainfall:

  • Purulia

  • Bankura

  • Paschim Bardhaman

  • Purba and Paschim Medinipur

  • Jhargram

These areas may also experience gusty winds ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, further intensifying the impact of the rainfall.

Forecast Through the Weekend

  • Saturday: Similar weather conditions are expected to continue, with scattered heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

  • Sunday: A slight dip in rainfall intensity is anticipated, but thundershowers will persist.

  • Monday and Tuesday: Light to moderate rainfall with thunder is likely across the region.

In addition to Kolkata, several other districts such as Howrah, North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Murshidabad, Birbhum, and Purba Bardhaman may also experience thunderstorms with rain on Saturday and Sunday.

North Bengal Largely Spared on Rath Yatra

In contrast, North Bengal is unlikely to see significant rainfall today. No weather warnings have been issued for this region. However, light showers with thunder may occur in some areas.

Heavy rainfall is forecasted in districts like Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar, and Jalpaiguri starting Saturday and extending into Sunday.
