Haryana Boxer Ankush Wins Gold, Celebrations Erupt in Village

Hisar, August 2: The village of Bhediya in Haryana is buzzing with celebrations following boxer Ankush Panghal’s gold medal victory at the 2026 Commonwealth Games. Competing in the men’s 80-kilogram weight category, Ankush made the nation proud by defeating an English boxer. The reactions of his parents to this achievement have also come to light.

Coach Pradeep Sawant expressed, “I started understanding Ankush’s game 11 years ago, and we had already planned that only England and Canada would pose tough competition at the Commonwealth Games. Ankush had lost to England in the World Cup finals, but this time we were fully prepared. He lost the first round 5-0, but we spoke to him for hours yesterday. Ankush executed the game plan perfectly, which is why the country has another gold medal.”

The coach further noted that Indian players performed exceptionally well this time. He mentioned that they train for two to two and a half hours in the morning and two and a half to three hours in the evening. Ankush followed the training regimen diligently and always gave his best. His preparation at home has clearly paid off.

Ankush’s father shared, “We made sure our children ate local food and didn’t even serve them tea. He has a flight today, and we will welcome him when he returns. There is a great atmosphere for sports in the village. I was a kabaddi player myself. Ankush initially showed interest in kabaddi before switching to boxing.”

After winning the gold, Ankush stated, “It feels amazing. I lost the first round 5-0, so there was a lot of pressure on me to win. But I had faith in myself, and it worked out. I just spoke to my father and family. Everyone is very happy and waiting for me to come home.”
