Ismail Haniyeh, the political chief of Hamas, has been killed. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran confirmed the news. According to the IRGC, a targeted blast at his home in Tehran resulted in the death of Haniyeh and one of his bodyguards.
The Palestinian organization Hamas has also confirmed Haniyeh’s death, stating that their leader was “assassinated” in Tehran. As of now, there has been no statement from Israel regarding the incident.
Haniyeh had been living outside of Palestine since 2019. Under his leadership, Hamas orchestrated one of the most brutal attacks on Israel in the past 75 years. Haniyeh joined Hamas in 1987 and became the chief political leader in 2017. The Shura Council, the highest decision-making body within Hamas, re-elected him unopposed for another four-year term in 2021. After becoming the leader, Haniyeh left the Gaza Strip for the first time in December 2019.
Personal Life: Ismail Haniyeh married twice. According to the Europe and Middle East News website, he married his second wife in 2009 at the age of 47. His first wife, Amal, is his uncle’s daughter, and they have 13 children together. Haniyeh’s second wife’s name is not publicly known.
