Halloween Candy Sales Fall as Consumers Face Rising Prices
Sales of Halloween candy have dropped significantly as consumers deal with increased living costs and high chocolate prices.

Halloween candy sales in the U.S. have seen a 6.7% decrease for the month ending October 17 compared to the same period last year, according to NielsenIQ.
High living costs and escalating chocolate prices are largely responsible for this decline. Chris Costagli, a vice president at NielsenIQ, pointed out that consumers are struggling with increased expenses, particularly in fuel and housing. He stated, “I can’t afford it this year because I’ve paid so much more for so many other things.”
Sales figures reveal that smaller bags of candy have experienced slight growth, while larger sizes are facing substantial declines. Since September, candy prices have risen faster than the overall inflation rate, increasing by 44% over the past five years. Comparatively, the average price for all food consumed at home rose by 22.5% in the same timeframe.
A recent offer from discount retailer Aldi for a 135-piece variety pack of Mars chocolate bars was priced at $19.87, nearly equal to what consumers paid for a 250-piece pack five years ago, illustrating rising costs. Global cocoa prices reached a previous high due to adverse weather in West Africa and disruptions in fertilizer supplies stemming from the Iran war. Cocoa prices that had dipped earlier in the year have started to rise again due to these factors.
Despite some candy prices being lower than last year, demand remains subdued. For instance, while non-chocolate Halloween candies saw prices drop to $6.08 per pound, sales did not improve. Sally Lyons Wyatt from Circana suggested that consumers are adopting a more measured approach to grocery shopping, often choosing to buy items right before consumption, which may indicate that candy purchases could be delayed as Halloween approaches.
The National Confectioners Association, representing major candy manufacturers like Mars and Ferrara Candy Co., maintains a positive outlook for Halloween sales, believing that consumer enthusiasm remains high. They stated, “We are just now entering the peak period for Halloween and consumer enthusiasm remains incredibly strong.”
