Gujarat Launches School Enrollment Drive for 2.8 Million Children

Gandhinagar, June 23: Gujarat is set to kick off a three-day ‘Shala Praveshotsav’ (School Enrollment Festival) and ‘Kanya Kelvani’ campaign starting today, aiming to enroll approximately 2.85 million children across 38,400 schools in the state. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel will inaugurate this state-wide initiative at the B.N. High School in Vadnagar, the same school where Prime Minister Narendra Modi received his education.

This year marks the 24th edition of the campaign, which was originally launched by Modi in 2003 during his tenure as Chief Minister to promote school enrollment and enhance participation in education.

In Vadnagar, Patel is expected to facilitate the enrollment of 389 students, ranging from preschool to Class 11, including two children at an Anganwadi center.

The enrollment drive will run from June 23 to June 25, with provisions for children over five years old and under six to enroll in preschool, while those over six and under seven will be admitted to Class 1.

The program will also assist students in transitioning to higher levels of education, allowing those who have completed Class 8 to enroll in Class 9, and those who have passed Class 10 to enter Class 11.

Described by the government as an ongoing educational outreach initiative, the campaign is expected to see participation from senior government officials, including the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, and IAS, IPS, and IFS officers, who will visit schools across the state to engage in enrollment activities.

Approximately 465 dignitaries and officials are anticipated to participate by visiting schools and assisting with admissions. During their visits, officials will also review the academic performance, physical infrastructure, and other achievements of schools in consultation with School Management Committees (SMCs).

The state government has emphasized that the enrollment festival will be conducted with the involvement of SMCs, parents, and local residents, highlighting the crucial role of community participation in encouraging children to enter and continue formal education.
