Google may be working on an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that can play characters while interacting with users. According to the report, these character-driven chatbots can be modeled after celebrities or customized by users to their liking. The chatbots are intended to support the technology giant’s Gemini Large Scale Language Model (LLM). Unlike Gemini’s AI chatbots, these customizable bots are designed to not only answer users’ questions but also have conversations with them.

According to a report in The Information (via 9to5Google), Google wants to develop an AI-powered chatbot that can be more of a friend than a query-solving assistant. The publication states that the company has been working on developing these chatbots for some time. These are customizable AI bots that “can be modeled after celebrities or created by users.”
The report also highlights that Google may be working with social media influencers to create chatbots based on their personalities. The bots will be powered by Gemini, although it is currently unclear whether they will use the Gemini 1.5 Pro or Gemini 1.0 models. It is intended to be a standalone project and not developed for a specific Google platform.
However, the report suggests that the company has discussed plans to integrate the chatbot into YouTube.
Based on the details shared in the report, it appears that these chatbots could resemble AI characters created by Meta. The social media giant has partnered with influencers and celebrities such as Kendall Jenner, Charlie Dumleu, Mister Beast, Snoop Dogg and Tom Brady to publish their AI personas on its messaging app. A similar chatbot is also used by the recently launched social media platform Butterflies.
Character-based chatbots were popularized by the AI platform Character.ai. Users can create AI bots by adding text messages describing their characters and personalities. The platform allows users to interact with characters such as Sherlock Holmes, Tony Stark, Elon Musk and Batman.
In addition, the platform also offers chatbots that are created for specific purposes, such as writing helpers, storytellers, and dating coaches. In particular, Character.ai uses Google Cloud Services and Tensor Processing Units (TPUs) to train its AI models.
