Google Reportedly Working on Inline Image Editing Capability for Gemini

Image Editing Capability for Gemini

Google is reportedly working on enhancing the image generation capabilities of its Gemini chatbot by introducing an inline image editing feature. According to a recent report, this new feature has been spotted in the beta version of the Google app. While it’s being developed for smartphones, it is not yet confirmed if the feature will also be available for the web client. This comes in line with similar functionalities already offered by Microsoft Designer, powered by Copilot.

Gemini’s Inline Image Editing Feature

The feature was discovered in the Google for Android beta app version 15.40.31.29 during an APK teardown process by Android Authority. However, even though it has been spotted, users who have signed up for the Google beta programme cannot test it yet, as it is not currently a visible or active feature.

Up until now, editing an image generated by Gemini has been a difficult process. Users who disliked certain aspects of an image would have to input additional prompts to generate a new version. This often led to the loss of favorable parts of the original image, as the next version might introduce unwanted changes or new errors.

How the Feature Works

The new feature could address this issue by allowing more selective changes to images. Based on a demo video shared by Android Authority, the inline editing works by letting users highlight a portion of the generated image and provide a follow-up prompt to modify only that specific area, while leaving the rest of the image unchanged.

However, the feature is still in development, and the demo shows that it isn’t functioning perfectly yet. In some instances, it changed the entire image instead of only the highlighted section. It’s expected that these issues will be resolved before the feature is officially rolled out to users.

This update could significantly improve the editing flexibility for users, streamlining the process of generating and refining AI-generated images within the Gemini chatbot.
