Google Gemini is updating to Android 10 to support older smartphones

Google’s Gemini app is expanding its compatibility with older Android operating systems, according to a report. Some users recently pointed out that the Gemini app is now available on Android 10 devices.

This is a new development as older versions of this app only support Android 12 and above. Users also say that the app runs without any lags or glitches.

In particular, the technology giant is said to be working on new Gemini features for the Android platform. New features include floating windows in background apps, real-time generation, quick scheduling, and more.

The development was spotted by several tipsters on X (formerly Twitter) and reported by 9to5Google. User Sumanta Das noted that the Gemini app “works well” on his Android 10 device.

This was later confirmed by APK Mirror author and founder Artem Rusakovsky, who posted: The latest version of Gemini is the first to support Android 10 and 11. All previous versions ran on Android 12 or higher (except the first version, which for some reason ran on Android 6 or higher). ”

This was also confirmed by a publication that tested the Gemini app on a Pixel smartphone running Android 10 and found that the app’s performance was exactly the same as the Android 14 version.

Interestingly, Google hasn’t announced any expansion for older devices, but it looks like the tech giant wants to bring more devices under its AI umbrella.

Please note that this does not affect the functionality of the Gemini app. So you should be able to use it as an on-device assistant replacing Google Assistant. However, it is not clear whether the functionality of the AI assistant will be the same in the new Android version.

The current Gemini AI assistant is not very practical. It can perform all generated AI tasks and manage basic functions on the device, but does not have access to third-party applications. So if you want to use Gemini to send messages via WhatsApp, you will have to go back to Google Assistant to complete the feature.

According to previous reports, the company is working on improving its AI assistant. Notably, the Gemini could soon be able to play music from third-party apps like Spotify and YouTube Music on the device.
