In a recent interview, Google CEO Sundar Pichai addressed concerns raised by websites and independent news publishers about the launch of the new Google AI Overview feature. This feature was announced at the company’s Google I/O 2024 developer conference on May 14.
In an interview with The Verge’s Nilay Patel last week, Pichai acknowledged the growing concerns but seemed optimistic about potential problems. . He reportedly emphasized that this feature increases user engagement and increases the number of clicks compared to regular search results.

The AI Overview feature was previously available to some people through Search Labs, but will be rolled out more broadly in the US with Google I/O 2024. This feature leverages the company’s Gemini Large Language Model (LLM) to perform search queries. Here you will find a brief overview with relevant links. Its launch aims to provide information “in the blink of an eye” but has worried independent news sites and publishers that rely on Google for web traffic, with some saying it is “a fatal blow to the company.” The Verge reported.
Speaking to The Verge’s Nilay Patel, Pichai argued the opposite, revealing that not only will the AI overview feature lead to increased engagement, but he also reportedly claimed that this information was leaked from the company’s internal data. Although no metrics were provided to support this claim, Pichai reportedly stressed that Google is trying to find a balance between supporting websites and providing users with useful and meaningful content.
Meanwhile, websites are losing traffic to intermediary aggregators instead of Google’s AI-powered features like SGE and AI Overview, The Verge quoted Pichai as saying. “Ironically, we made changes to actually drive more traffic to smaller sites. Some of the sites we receive a lot of complaints from are mid-sized aggregators,” the CEO said.
Pichai also emphasized the importance of human-generated content, saying that user preferences and content quality are important. He noted that it is necessary to maintain an optimistic but cautious approach when integrating artificial intelligence into content creation and production.
