Nagpur, August 9: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized gold valued at over ₹3 crore during an operation at Nagpur Railway Station. One passenger has been arrested in connection with this gold smuggling case.
The DRI team in Nagpur received a tip-off that gold, smuggled through the India-Bangladesh border, was to be transported by train. Acting on this information, officials monitored the 12102 Gyaneshwari Express.
It was discovered that the gold was intended to be delivered to its next destination through a passenger on the same train. Subsequently, the DRI team maintained surveillance at Nagpur Railway Station. Upon the train’s arrival, the suspicious passenger was detained, and gold hidden in his belongings was recovered.
A total of 16 gold bars weighing 2 kilograms and 165 grams were seized. The estimated value of the confiscated gold in the international market is approximately ₹3.09 crore. Preliminary investigations revealed that this gold was smuggled into India via the India-Bangladesh border and was planned to be transported to other parts of the country by rail.
The DRI has begun interrogating the arrested passenger and is on the lookout for others involved in this smuggling network. The process of depositing the gold into the government treasury has been initiated.
DRI officials stated that they are closely monitoring cross-border smuggling activities and that such operations will continue in the future.
