Girl refuses to marry after groom demands cash, car on wedding day

Udaipur : A gutsy girl taught a lesson to her greedy groom on her wedding day by refusing to marry and instead went to the police station to give a written complaint. Fearing legal action, the groom’s party allegedly apologised to the girl and her family,eventually the complaint was withdrawn, however, the marriage didnt take place.

Ishita (30) daughter of KaranSingh Khajanchi resident of Sector-14 area was engaged to one Amit Baid son of Vijay Singh resident of Kolkata. Both of them had private services.The baraat reached Udaipur on July 6 and pre-nuptial ceremonies were held as per schedule. The ladies sangeet took place on Sunday and the wedding was slated for Monday. Surprisingly, Ishita told her family that she didnt want to marry as Amit was pressing her for fulfilling dowry demand. He demanded 10 lakh rupees cash and a car as dowry, family sources said. Ishita claimed that she had given 3 lakh rupees already but Amit kept pressurizing her.

Ishita told the media that she was so stressed that at a point of time she even thought of committing suicide as her family’s reputation would be at stake. She even tried to pacify the groom that she would arrange the remaining amount but when he didnt respond to her messages, she decided to call off the wedding. Ishita and her family members went to the Surajpole police station where after hearing her,the groom’s party was summoned. Later, after mediation talks, both the parties reconciled and left. ” We have been given a written statement from Ishita and Amit that due to some differences, they do not want to marry.They said their differences have been sorted mutually and they do not wish any legal action to be taken. We dont know whether any dowry demand was actually made,since both the parties agreed, no complaint has been lodged” Adarsh Kumar Parihar, circle inspector Surajpole police station told Udaipur Kiran.
