Gautam Gambhir on the Verge of Making History as Coach in T20 World Cup

Ahmedabad, March 8: The Indian cricket team is set to compete for the T20 World Cup title for the third time at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad this Sunday. India will face New Zealand in the final of the T20 World Cup 2026. While the match is expected to be challenging, a victory would not only mark a historic achievement for the Indian team but also add a unique record to coach Gautam Gambhir’s name.

The Indian cricket team won the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007 under the captaincy of MS Dhoni, defeating Pakistan. Currently, head coach Gautam Gambhir was part of that victorious team and played a crucial role in their success, scoring 75 runs off 54 balls in the final held in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Gambhir now has the opportunity to win the T20 World Cup as a coach after having done so as a player. If the Indian team triumphs over New Zealand, he will become the first individual to win the T20 World Cup both as a player and a coach.

The Indian team aims to make history by becoming the first team to win the T20 World Cup consecutively, marking their third overall title.

It took the Indian team 17 years to secure their second T20 World Cup title after 2007. Although they reached the finals in 2014, they did not win. In 2024, under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy, India claimed their second T20 World Cup by defeating South Africa. Following this victory, key players like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravindra Jadeja retired from this format. Rohit’s successor, Suryakumar Yadav, has maintained the team’s success and led them to the World Cup final. The team is now gearing up to create history by winning the T20 World Cup for the third time.
