Gareth Batty has stepped down from his role as head coach at Surrey to join the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) as an assistant coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League season. Batty leaves Surrey after five successful years, during which he led the county to three consecutive County Championship titles from 2022 to 2024.

Batty first took charge of Surrey’s head coach position in 2022 and achieved a remarkable feat by becoming the first team in nearly 60 years to win three consecutive titles in the competition. Under his leadership, Surrey also reached the knockout stages of the Vitality Blast each year, including two appearances at Finals Day. He expressed excitement about his new role, stating, “The new journey is a very exciting one for my family and I with CSK in the IPL and I’m looking forward to getting going,” Batty said.

His exit ends a 21-year association with the club, where he first played from 1998 to 2001 and returned in 2010, leading the team as captain from 2015 to 2017. Batty retired from playing in 2021 and quickly transitioned to the coaching staff, ultimately becoming head coach in 2022.

Director of Cricket Alec Stewart praised Batty’s contributions, noting his significant role during one of the most successful periods in the club’s history. “Gareth embraced that challenge… His achievement in leading the side to three consecutive County Championship titles is a reflection of his hard work,” Stewart said. Although disappointed by Batty’s departure, Stewart acknowledged the allure of the opportunity with CSK, which would allow him to spend more time with family outside the IPL season.

The CSK coaching staff has undergone changes, including the departure of long-serving batting coach Michael Hussey, who had been with the franchise for eight years. Zaheer Khan has been appointed as the new head coach. CSK aims for a turnaround after recent disappointing finishes in the IPL, hoping that new strategies will bring them back to championship contention.

Batty’s first tasks with CSK will include assisting with player retentions ahead of the November 15 deadline and planning strategies for the mini auction in Goa in mid-December.
