New Delhi, May 14: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari met with Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Wednesday, assuring him of the expedited completion of long-pending highway and flyover projects in the state.
The infrastructure projects discussed include Makhu, Adamapur, and Bhawanigarh. During the meeting, CM Mann also raised the demand to declare strategic roads, such as the Fazilka-Ferozepur corridor near the international border, as national highways. He emphasized the need to accelerate the completion of projects that have been stalled for years.
The Chief Minister noted that the central government has assured approval for the construction of a four-lane road from Bhawanigarh to Kotshamir. Additionally, there was agreement on the expansion of the Barnala-Bajakhana and Malerkotla-Barnala corridors, which are seen as significant steps for Punjab’s connectivity, economic activities, and security.
CM Mann mentioned that Minister Gadkari praised the Punjab government’s ‘Road Safety Force’ initiative aimed at saving lives in road accidents and ensuring safe traffic. He also raised concerns regarding the delayed completion of the Amritsar Walla Flyover project, urging for its swift finalization.
This project was awarded by the NHAI and was supposed to be completed by September 15, 2023. However, despite several extensions, the work is only about 76 percent complete, with a new deadline set for April 30, 2026. The Chief Minister highlighted that this corridor connects Amritsar Airport to Sri Harmandir Sahib and experiences heavy traffic, including VIP movement. The delay has resulted in congestion, security risks, and significant inconvenience for the public.
In another issue, he pointed out the need for view cutters at the Hussainar Chowk flyover on the Bathinda-Malout Road, which falls under NHAI jurisdiction.
